Would it be possible to custom cut a gel sheet and attach it to the outside of the Einstein dome, or would heat be too much of an issue?

You are probably going to suffer the same results as if you put the gel right on the flash tube. A melted, smoking mess.

i agree that this is not a good idea. better to gel the modifier.
