While the spill-kill fabric was designed for the white PLM to produce a 180° shoot through modifier, I was wondering if one could cut a square or rectangle in the middle of it and then use it overtop of the silver PLM - with or without the diffusion fabric - to create a square/rectangular pattern of light. I would guess that simply cutting the fabric would lead to it tearing eventually without somehow sealing the cut edges. Any thoughts? Are proper flags better for this purpose?

Sure . . . this would work. The fabric is pretty rip resistant. You could consider putting masking tape on the inside at the cut corners to prevent tearing. Also, any opaque black fabric from Walmart, etc would save you some money . . . though you won't find anything wider than 61".

If you hate sewing (like me) just clip it on with Office Depot spring paper clips.

You can also get black ripstop nylon at a fabric store. Four separate pieces and some clips allows you to vary the size and shape of the opening.
