I really want the ability to use the modelling lamps when in the studio so I'm going to get a UK to USA transformer.

Could someone with better math and electronics knowledge help?

Worst case scenario is that I will have an AB1600, two AB800 and and AB400 all firing on maximum output.

I was going to go for a 3000w version, would this cope with this or should I be looking at a 5000w version?

3000W is plenty for this. Even 1500 to 2000W should be OK. Running all the modeling lamps at full only takes 600W and you would have to fire at full power every time they recycled to start heating up a 2000W - 3000W transformer.

Just to complete the loop.....

The 3000w step-down arrived yesterday. Nicely made piece of kit but VERY dense for its size. It's very heavy to move.

I've plugged in on a gang plug a B1600, B800 and B400 and fired them all at full power with no issues. It's a little noisy when you fire the lights as it produces a 'pwang' noise from the coils but you can live with that.
