OK, the first step I listed was to test the light from its own test button. This is the square red button on the back of the light itself. Using this button, if the light does not consistently fire the light, the problem is with the flash and not the remotes. Try using another light if you have one.
If the flash fires fine from its test button, but not the receiver's test button, then the cord is likely to blame (though not always). Replacing the cord should fix it.
If the light is not firing from these locations, the camera and CST test buttons are not going to fire any more consistently, as the problem is localized to the flash and/or receiver.
