Post subject:  PLM Speed Ring Quality

I have been using Paul Buff products for over 20 years. Over this time I have seen various levels of quality in the product lines. The Ultras are built like tanks and the soft boxes are very durable. The flash receivers are also sturdy product but the transmitters are of poor build quality and I have had at least 4 fail for a number of reasons. 2 fell apart. One had the frequency knob pop off.

I just purchased the largest PLM umbrella and as happy as I am with the quality of the umbrella itself the speed ring leaves much to be desired. The single wing nut holding the rod to the speed ring is not a solid connection and the small plate it screws into is not thick enough and is already bending slightly when using the large umbrella. I am very disappointed in this speed ring. Compared to the durability of the Paul Buff speed rings mounted on their soft boxes the PLM speed ring seems like a cheap Chinese knock off.

The thumb screw that hold the center rods together inside the umbrella is also of very low quality and feels as if it will be snapping off with any kind of abuse on a job.

I am going to give the umbrella a test drive for another few days but I think the umbrella will be going back for one without a speed ring.
