Pulled out a WL1600 that hadn't been used for a while, wouldn't test fire (short beep), then finally it did fire, but I didn't like the initial misfires so pulled out the flash tube.

It looks like this:

My questions are:
a) assuming I push the tube back in firmly, is it safe to use like this?
b) what would cause this in the first place? My working assumption is the tube got jostled slightly loose and it arced when it finally fired.
c) can I over-seat the tube? Because I pushed somewhat firmly when re-seating, and it went in way too far. Then I pulled it back and it seemed to "snick" into place.

This does indeed come from a tube that is not fully seated to the eyelets in the light. Similar damage is almost guaranteed to the eyelets. If a replacement tube is installed, the damaged eyelets would then damage the new tube.

The only resolution is to send the unit in for repair, and purchase a new tube, if you do not already own one.

no, you cannot over seat the tube. A detent of some sort may heve been created from the arcing, but it is not a feature of a properly working light.
