Here's what I wrote David Hobby when he informed me of this blog article:
"David,
While I'm sure this came from Bron, it is entirely credible. Fact is Bron uses IGBTs and Profoto doesn't, Bron allows constant, adjustable color and Profoto doesn't, Bron publishes t.1 times and achieves 1/8000 t.1 (at low power settings). Profoto publishes duration of 1/12,000 (t.5) (achieves about 1/4000 t.1 at low power settings but doesn't mention t.1). This explains the increased blur on the Profoto shots.
Profoto publishes the extremely misleading spec: "Extremely high color stability, ± 50°K over energy range 5.0 - 10.0" Implying constant color. In reality, what this "spec" says is that any given power setting the color will be constant from shot to shot. What it doesn't say is, like any other non IGBT flash, the PRO 8 color will vary from Full Power to Minimum Power . . . thus the warm color shift on the Profoto side by side shots.
In general, Profoto specs and advertising are probably the most hyped in the industry. As for the "Pre Ignition" thing, it does nothing to improve action stopping, and actually impedes it.
http://blog.bronimaging.com/2010/04/pro ... r-instead/Another point . . . readers tend to think with Bron that they can achieve any color and any flash duration they want, at any power level. The is totally false . . . short, controlled flash durations and control of color can only be achieved at reduced power levels. Full Power color is fixed and t.1 times are extremely long . . . on the order of 1/100 second depending on the model . . . . 4 to 6 times as long as Einstein.
As for me doing an Einstein comparison, while I would love to do this and could guarantee essentially the same results at Broncolor in Constant Color Mode at 5600°K, first, I don't have time or access to Bron and Profoto and, second, if I did these tests, I would instantly be accused of being biased and of manipulating the results.
Now, of course, if you can challenge a professional who has the Bron and or Profoto equipment who would like to do a legitimate comparison with Einstein I would be more than happy to provide the Einstein equipment and any modifiers needed.
One last thing: Bron allows you to dial in whatever color temperature you want while Einstein limits you to a constant 5600°K, or action mode with t.1 time up to 1/13,500. Profoto allows no control of color."
