The D5000 does not have an external PC sync cable port. You'll need to purchase a hot shoe to PC converter, or use a wireless trigger system. Considering wireless triggers are both convenient and fairly low cost, that is what most people use. Cables are cheaper, just more clumsy. A converter should cost less than $15.

Another trick you can do, since the 5000 has an on camera flash:

1) Put the flash in to manual mode, and turn down the power so it isn't affecting the exposure of the shot. (or block the light using a small card).
2) Turn on the optical slave trigger on the AB400.
3) Be sure the trigger on the AB can see your flash.
4) Shoot away.

This usually works best in doors.

The above is very good advice. I did have to verify the pop up could go to manual (not all can). For reference, how to do this is on page 162 of your manual.

I concur, wireless remotes are the most popular meand to trigger, for good reason. However, a standard sync cord is good for back up. You will need the hotshoe adapter, which we carry, but any well stocked photo store will carry them as well, if access to one is available.
