I didn't recharge after my last use, (which was a while ago) but it wasn't depleted, and then I didn't use it for a long while. I just reread the manual that said it should be charged every month or there will be 'exhaustion'...what does that mean? Did I ruin it?

depends on how low it was and how long it has been. Mosy likely you will see a reduction in number of shots per charge. How much would be hard to say.
