In case anyone is wondering about all the 50s/60s music now on our company phone system, it's all from my Pal Recording Studio, and Original Sound record company, circa 1957 to 1969. Most of it is me, some Zappa, some other artists . . . the entire archives from Pal and Original Sound. Most songs are vintage non hits and come from a gigantic collection just released in collaboration with Greg Russo and Russo/Buff publishing. They are available for download at many sites including Amazon, CD baby and other . . . about 25 CDs in all. Just search Paul Buff, or contact info@paulcbuff.com if more info is wanted. I'm not posting this to try to make money on this stuff . . . just to document all this stuff. |

Yeh . . . Mike was pretty darn good, and lived around the corner from Pal. Interesting story: I always loved saxes, so one weekend I rented an Alto and a book "How to play the Saxophone" for $15. Monday morning I emerged from the studio with "Tijuana Surf" . . . a multiple sax surf instrumental, with Grunion Run by myself and Zappa as the B side in hand, and headed for Hollywood. A couple of months later, Tijuana Surf was #1 in Mexico and stayed there for 6 months. "I Want To Hold Your Hand" was #2. No money, but big ego boost. My sax skills were always pretty rudimentary, But hey, you do what you can! |

Wow. Really takes me back. I've played bass for decades; gotta say Green Eyed Lady has one of the great bass lines of all time. And now, back to photography... |

Sugarloaf was a great band with one hit . . . a group of young music teachers from Colorado. Same producer (Frank Slay) as Strawberry Alarm Clock's Incense and Peppermints who I recorded many songs with before Slay picked them up and hired a writer to add lyrics to their "One Last Try" instrumental (Incense and Peppermints track). I hope disinterested photographers can overlook this off-topic nostalgia. |
