I want to do some product photography..

I'm sure the 400 would be strong enough, yes? I'm thinking if I get three of them.. two with 24x36 softboxes and the other with a grid on it.. or ?? any other recommendations?

Depends on the product and look you are going for. Shoes, small appliances, probably. Large items, maybe, maybe not.

But, one thing to remember, with still items like this, if you keep the camera on a tripod and the shutter open, you can flash the lights twice for the same exposure as with a B800. Four times for a B1600, and 8 times for an X3200 equivalent.

yeah.. you can always dial down..

I'm thinking 2 mains with the AB800's
and one AB400 for background spot, etc.

for the most part it will be small stuff.

Again, it depends on the apertures you want. If you are shooting wide open, 800's may be too powerful even on a low setting. You could, however, go with neutral density filters on the lens and or lights.
