I have a LG4X unit I picked up used and while testing it tonight I had the following problems:

1. Power sliders give reversed value on model lights and strobe power (full power gives me 1/32 on the strobe)

2. Sync-input and FIRE button do not fire strobe.

Is this simply a RJ11 cable problem? I read somewhere on the forum that the LG4X requires a cross-over cable. I'm using a couple of standard RJ11 cables I had around from old phones/modems (I've only got these 2 with 4 wires). One is NOT a cross-over, I can't tell about the other.

Thanks!

Yes, both of these characteristics are totally possible with a non-crossover style cable.

You must have a 4 or 6 conductor cross over cable.

OK thanks.

If I pick up a standard RJ11 phone 4-conductor cord at the electronics store, is it likely to be cross-over or not?

Otherwise I need to track down my friend with the cable crimper to make my own. :)

Hard to say, really. It should not be a problem to find them, and they should be marked on the package. We carry them here: http://www.paulcbuff.com/powercords.php (second to last)
