I currently own 64 inch PLM and B800... I cannot decide whether I should have 86 inch PLM with diffusing fabric VS 30X60 soft box. What would be different in the power output of 86 inch PLM + front diffusing fabric VS 30X60 soft box?? What would be the difference in beam spread? Many thanks in advance. Dkim |

We are in the process of retesting all components. With a cover on, you would probably get a wider spread from the PLM than softbox (mostly because it is bigger than the softbox). With that in mind, more spread, the less light falling on any one point. We do not have a revised PLM to give any absolute measurements right now, but this information will be available one it is compiled. |

An 86" arc PLM has a 27” radius so that when an White Front Diffuser Fabric is fitted, the Area of that Circle of now diffuser, not relector area is reduced to 2,290 in²! The 86" arc PLM's diffuser area is 490 in² (21%) larger than the 30" x 60" Giant Softbox's 1,800 in². Other factors are: how well light is transmitted by the Front Diffuser Fabrics of the two different modifiers, how evenly the light is distributed, and how much it is spread by them, all of which can only be know by testing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- With that in mind, more spread, the less light falling on any one point. Also, consider that the softbox has grid available. This gives you much more control over spill. I have Gen One 84" PLM and the diffuser. It offers nice broad light. The softbox is much more controllable light relative to spill. Given the attractive pricing, I have both. |

A few minor corrections to the above math. The radius of the diffuser is 37.5" (the open face of the 86" PLM is 75") This makes the surface 4415 sq in. This makes the PLM about 2.5x more area, vs. 1.3x in the example above Yes, the soft boxes can be gridded, where as PLM cannot, giving you more control. The PLM sans diffuser will give about the same beam spread as a gridded softbox (but will still be a broader light, as it is bigger than the softbox to start). |

Personally I like the light from the big PLM without the diffusion front. With the front diffuser its a nice large soft source. Makes light similar to a window. Naturally that's with the modifier close to the subject. |
